Winter As winter weather approaches, Wilson County EMA reminds everyone to stay prepared and prioritize safety when going outdoors or traveling. Cold temperatures, icy roads, and unpredictable weather conditions can create challenges, but with the right precautions, you can stay safe and protected.
Outdoor Safety:
- Dress in Layers: Wear warm, waterproof clothing, including hats, gloves, and insulated boots. Layers help retain heat and can be adjusted as needed.
- Limit Time Outdoors: Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can lead to frostbite or hypothermia. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks to warm up indoors.
- Be Visible: Shorter days and low visibility due to snow or fog make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. Wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight if walking near roadways.
Travel Safety:
- Prepare Your Vehicle: Check tires, brakes, and antifreeze levels. Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent freezing and ensure you have enough fuel in case of delays.
- Create an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, and a phone charger.
- Monitor Road Conditions: Check weather forecasts and road reports before heading out. Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
- Drive Cautiously: Slow down, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking on icy or snow-covered roads.
